Introduction

iLovePDF is one of those "how is this even free?" products that turned a boring utility into a global, bootstrapped SaaS machine. It started as a one-page side project in Barcelona and today pulls in hundreds of millions of visits a month and millions in recurring revenue without big funding or big ads.

Quick snapshot

Marco Grossi, ILovePDF.com founder

  • Launched: 2010, by designer/developer Marco Grossi in Barcelona.

  • Team: Around 40–45 people as of 2024.

  • Scale: Around 150M–226M visits per month recently, ranking among the world's top 50 websites.

  • Model: Freemium SaaS + API, 80–90% of revenue from subscriptions, rest from a small ad banner.

  • Funding: Bootstrapped, no external investors; founder has turned down acquisition offers.

This is a story of a simple product, ruthless focus on search traffic, and a freemium model where 99% of users pay nothing and the remaining sliver funds everything.

The spark: one annoying PDF problem

In 2010, Grossi needed to merge two PDF files and was annoyed by how clunky and expensive the available tools were. The market was full of bloated desktop software and complicated workflows for what felt like a tiny task. So he built a simple, free, one-page site that did one thing: merge PDFs quickly in the browser.

There was no "startup launch," no funding round, no PR push. Just a useful tool, a clean interface, and a URL that people could pass around.
